A woman picked up a weak little puppy on the streets of Arizona, USA. His mother wasn’t around, but the baby was in a sad state and desperately needed help. A kind woman decided to help him, wrapped him in a towel, and took him to the nearest shelter, Arizona Humane Society.

“I looked in the parking lot and saw this lady running in with an animal in her hands who was completely limp and not moving,” Smith, founder of Sky Sanctuary Rescue, told The Dodo. “I was like, ‘Oh no, I know how the Humane Society is, and I know that this animal is going to be euthanized.”

It turned out to be a three-week-old girl. When the shelter staff saw her, their hearts sank as the little girl, covered in fleas, was so weak that she could barely move. At first, they thought it would be better to put her to sleep, but then they showed her to the doctors.
The cub was given the name Penelope and the staff decided to do whatever they could to save her life. They gave her a blood transfusion and medicine and she miraculously got a little better. In addition, Murphy, another rescue dog who lived at the shelter, took an interest in the little girl.

“I got in the car, and I was thinking, ‘Please call me. Please call me,’ because I knew that that puppy was not gonna make it,” Smith said. “Sure enough, within 10 minutes, she called me and said they wanted to euthanize the puppy, and I said, ‘Nope. Bring it to my vet right now.’”

The dog immediately began to take care of Penelope. He was constantly coming up to her, sniffing, licking, and checking how she was feeling. Next to him, the baby gradually began to come to her senses and blossom, which the staff was very happy about. In the meantime, they continued to feed her according to the clock and give her medications.

All the while, the staff searched for a mother dog in the area where they found the puppy – and after several days of searching, they were able to find her. The mother dog was also in a sad state, but when she was reunited with Penelope, it was clear that they were definitely mother and daughter. They were immensely happy to see each other. Mommy immediately took custody of the baby and began to feed her.
Right now Penelope and her mom are in a holding facility. When they recover and Penelope grows up, they will find permanent owners for them. Thank you to the kind people who rescued them from the street!

“She is super outgoing and loves to roll on her back and get belly rubs,” Smith said. “Penelope, of course, just loves being comforted and especially having her mom back.”
