Model Nyakim Gatwech Challenges Beauty Standards
Nyakim Gatwech from South Sudan is one of the most unique and popular models. She has been nicknamed the Queen of Darkness because of her coal-black skin, but she is not offended. On the contrary, she teaches people not to be afraid of the dark and breaks traditional standards of beauty.
Now Niakim, 24, lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is quite happy with her looks. But that wasn’t always the case. More than once she’s had to listen to strange questions about her skin. Once an Uber driver even told her to whiten her skin, and she laughed it off.
Niakim has conquered the fashion industry with her luxurious black skin. But she’s also an activist for African-American rights.
The model is not only a supporter of diversity and naturalness in the fashion industry but she is also a fighter for the rights of black people. For this, she has even nicknamed the “queen of darkness” – the girl happily accepted the nickname. She has repeatedly emphasized that American beauty standards can harm people with dark skin by causing them to suffer from “not conforming” to the standard. Nyakim urges us to ignore this and to love the skin everyone lives in.
