There is a frightening practice of mass killing male chicks on egg farms in most countries of the world. As they do not lay eggs they are completely useless for such farms. It is estimated that in a year the world will thus destroy about 4-6 billion male chicks simply because they were not born females. This practice has troubled animal welfare societies for many years because it is totally inhumane. Germany is the first country to officially ban killing Cocks. The law takes effect in 2022.

Now, to solve the problem of male chicks, German farmers are being advised to use technology to prevent cockerels from being born, primarily by determining the sex of the animal before it hatches.

At a later stage of the transition, which will take effect in 2024, only methods will be allowed at the beginning of the incubation period, so that even the embryos of the chickens do not experience pain.
Only in Germany, an estimated 45 million male chickens are killed each year as a result of a practice that animal welfare advocates bluntly call “chick chopping.”
