A family from Canada recently found several small kittens in their backyard in their shed. Apparently, they had been left behind by a stray cat who never came back for them, or had been lost on her own. The kittens were about 6-7 weeks old, but they needed help and care.
The family immediately contacted Salty Animal Rescue, whose staff volunteered to help. Two black kittens stood out among all the kittens; they were the weakest and needed sensitive care. They were named Akela and Baloo.

“I noticed they hadn’t been adopted, and without hesitation, I completed an application form,” Candice told Love Meow.

“The two girls are a bonded pair which stood out to me. The love they share for each other is one I wanted to be part of. I always wanted twins, and it looks like I got them.They had no human contact for the first six weeks of their little lives. Akela and Sassy Loo were shy but gaining confidence more and more each day.”

The black sisters were always together. They were like two peas in a pod, and always played, ate, and slept side by side. Later all the kittens were sent to the shelter of a volunteer.

The kittens had never interacted with people, so at first, they were very afraid of the new environment. However, day by day they began to get used to it and became more and more confident. The kittens realized that no one would hurt them here.

“To this day the girls are inseparable — they sleep together, play together, get into ‘trouble’ together. They have each other’s back always. It’s a bond that has only strengthened over time,” Candice told Love Meow.

Under responsive care, all the kittens blossomed including Akela and Baloo. The sisters still did not leave each other and were almost inseparable. When the time came to look for owners for all the kittens, it was decided not to separate the sisters and fortunately, the search for a home did not last long.

The kittens, now renamed Zoey and Zara, are joined at the hip. “When I picked the girls up, they were so tiny but mighty little beans,” Candice shared with Love Meow.

“Zara was the protector of Zoey, who was hesitant and a little fearful of her new human and home. They stayed by each other’s side always. If Zara got too far from Zoey, she would speak out.”

One family was interested in the kittens and took them into their home. Now they have grown, have become much more confident and charming, and, most importantly, have caring owners by their side. Thanks to the kind people who once rescued these beauties!
