Girl Spotted Feathered Lump In The Vegetable Garden
An American girl named April Rose recently went out on the veranda to help her mother clean up the leaves. While she was cleaning, she suddenly noticed a little lump that had come from somewhere in the garden. The girl approached, and at first thought it was a leaf in front of her. But looking closer and taking it in her hands, she realized that it was a bird.
“I happened to look down by a rocking chair and saw a little blob that I thought was a leaf,” Rose told The Dodo.
The girl immediately recognized that she was looking at a hummingbird chick who couldn’t even fly yet.
“I walked over to it because I wasn’t sure and, as I squatted down, I realized it was a baby hummingbird!” Rose said.
She checked the nearby trees, but she couldn’t find the nest – also, hummingbird nests are very small, so they’re hard to see. Then April decided to act quickly – she made a homemade nest, where she placed the chick to make it feel safe. She hung the nest on the fence next to the trees.
“She looked scared and she started trying to fly, but couldn’t,” Rose said. “I started looking around to see if Mom was anywhere, but at that time she wasn’t — not that we saw, anyway.”
Fortunately, the mother hummingbird returned later, and immediately noticed her missing chick. She tried to lift it back into the nest, but the baby was too heavy for that.
The baby stayed in the makeshift nest for two days, during which time the mother bird flew in to visit, care for, and feed it. By then, April and her family had found the nest where the mother hummingbird had flown and moved the chick there. The girl was happy that the baby was saved. Thank her for her good deed!
