A homeless, pregnant cat named Mayhem was brought from the streets to a Kentucky shelter in the United States. The cat was about to give birth, so they quickly started looking for a home for her.
Mayhem was taken in by a veterinarian named Emily, who worked at the shelter. In the early days, it was clear that the cat had lived most of her life on the street, and was very afraid of people. She would hide in corners and not allow herself to be touched.
“I do a lot of animal fostering, especially of pregnant cats and dogs, so they can give birth in a home instead of a shelter,” Dr. Bewley told The Dodo.
“I tried to spend extra time with her, but she made it clear she wasn’t happy,” Dr. Bewley said. “One night, she escaped her locked kennel, and I found her in my unfinished storage room. I tried to catch her, but she was nervous and ran from me. I watched her run up the wall and into the ceiling!”
One day Mayhem even escaped from her room into the caretaker’s half-built storage room and hid there right in the ceiling. Emily’s family tried to lure the cat out of there but to no avail. After a couple of days, the caretaker realized what the cat had chosen to hide in there for.
A couple of days later, they heard a thin cat squeak from the ceiling – it turned out Mayhem had given birth. She had managed to give birth while secluded on the ceiling, and the caretaker had to make some repairs to get her out and help with the babies – but she succeeded.
Emily managed to get them out, and the four kittens and their mommy were perfectly safe. The babies were completely healthy, and Mayhem, as a caring mother, did not leave them. Later, two more orphaned kittens, which were found on the street, were placed with her – the kitty accepted them on an equal footing with her own.
Now the kitty takes care of six adorable kittens. When the kittens grow up, they and Mayhem will find permanent owners.
“She’s a great mom and she is very relaxed and happy. The ‘ceiling kittens’ and the two orphaned kittens that Mayhem adopted are all thriving!”
