When the owner took Gus from the shelter, the kitty didn’t come out from under the bed for about five months, constantly hiding. He had experienced so much pain from people that he was afraid of them and for a long time he could not get used to them.

“I fed him under the bed, had his litter under the bed and just let him recover in his own time,” Sebastian Hart, Gus’s dad, told The Dodo.

Over time, his owner’s care helped Gus forget the wounds of the past, and he became calmer. Gus has also become much more social – he likes to let his owner know everything that’s going on around him with his meow.

“I’m not his owner, I’m his friend,” Hart said. “He is just an old soul.”
One day Gus meowed more than usual, and at first, the owner thought that the cat wanted to socialize as usual but it was something else… The excited cat ran up to his owner’s feet and then seemed to be leading him somewhere.

“When he was carrying on from the side of the house I didn’t think much of it at first, just figured he was seeing a butterfly or whatever,” Hart said.

“He was sitting in front of this tiny baby chick,” Hart said. “It was screaming for its mum … Gus was calling out to me to help this tiny little thing out.”

Following the cat, the man saw that he was leading him to a little chick that had fallen out of the nest. It was calling loudly for its mother, screaming as hard as it could. The man immediately picked up the chick carefully, and when he saw which nest it had fallen out of, he brought it back.

“I got on the ladder and put the bird in its nest, realized there were two more in there and saw the bird’s mother watching the whole thing,” Hart said. “Gus figured his job was done [and] went back to chewing his cat grass. It was just so wholesome.”
When the man returned the chick to the nest, after a while the mother bird flew in. As if realizing that his mission was accomplished, Gus quietly went away.
